Bayelsa State government yesterday debunked the claim that some aides of Governor Seriake Dickson have dumped the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a related development, the Chairman, Senate Committee on Rules and Business, Ita Enang, yesterday assured Nigerians that the seeming threat posed by defection of some aggrieved PDP senators to the APC would not affect the activities of the Senate when it resumes next week.
The Commissioner for Information, Mr. Markson Fefegha, who debunked the claim in a statement, said the publication was false and a misrepresentation of the facts.
He added that the report was a calculated attempt to rubbish the good name of the governor, who is working in tandem with his aides to develop the state.
According to him, it is surprising that apart from Richard Kpodo, former Security Adviser to ex-Governor, Timipre Sylva; former Youth Leader of PDP in the South-South, Mr. Godwin Sidi and erstwhile Chairman of Southern Ijaw Council, Timipa Orunemigha, who are all Sylva’s loyalists, there was no case of any other defector.
The commissioner said the reporter ought to have been courageous enough to mention names of at least a few of Governor Dickson’s aides who allegedly defected to APC.
Enang, who spoke with journalists in Abuja, described his colleagues as “responsible senators who are always interested in the unity and progress of the country”.
He added that the dissenting lawmakers would always consider the interest of the country above party interest.
He said: “The senators see themselves as one and what is paramount in their minds is how to move the nation forward. We will all work together as a single body to address all issues for consideration, dispassionately.”
