AMIDST myriad of challenges confronting the nation, former head of
state, General Yakubu Gowon, has chided critics of the present
administration, insisting that the country was not a failed state.
Gowon expressed this optimism in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital,
at the weekend, when he led a team of conveners of Nigeria Prays, on
the occasion of one-day national prayer rally for the South-East zone,
held at the Women Development Center, in the capital city.
According to him, “prayer can solve problems better and faster than
generals and soldiers can do with the physical weapons of war.”
“No country in the world is free from challenges. I have no doubt in
my mind that God will honour our collective prayers and intercession for
our dear nation and heal our dear nation of insecurity,” he reiterated.
He said the essence of the prayer rally, tagged ‘Plea for mercy’, was
to mobilise all Nigerians toward regular and result-oriented prayers,
for the healing and transformation of the nation. He added that the
programme would promote patriotism, transparency, incorruptibility in
leadership, governance and in the lives of Nigerians.
The former head of state condemned the politicisation of security
challenges in the
country as well as the activities of criminal elements
in the society, maintaining that the Federal Government was committed
to implementing measures geared towards enthroning sanity in the system.
Earlier in his remarks, Governor Martin Elechi commended Gowon for
the initiative, enjoining the citizenry of the country to continue to
embrace peace.
The governor urged the citizenry to turn to God, insisting that God endowed the country with lots of resources.
The prayer rally had in attendance the leadership of the Christian
Association of Nigeria (CAN), Ebonyi State chapter; Church leaders
across the South-East geo-political zone, and the entire body of Christ
in the zone, the political class, youth organisations, members of the
national and state assemblies, among others.
