The Labour Party in Ekiti State has announced 54-year-old civil
servant, Alhaja Maryam Abimbola Ogunlade, from Emure-Ekiti as the
running mate of the party’s candidate in the June 21 governorship
election, Mr Opeyemi Bamidele.
Alhaja Ogunlade was presented to members of the party and the public
at a ceremony in Iyin-Ekiti on Friday by the leadership of the party in
the state, with the candidate of the party, Bamidele, describing her
choice as a representation of the all-inclusive government the Labour
Party was planning to run in the state.
Bamidele
told the gathering that 19 members of the party showed interest in the
position, but explained that the choice of Ogunlade was arrived at
following consultations with the leaders of the party.
He said Ogunlade, who voluntarily resigned her position as a deputy
director in the state’s civil service “a few days ago” after 33 years of
service, met the criteria
for the office.
He said: “I want a deputy who will not spend a whole of her life
playing politics and one who will not stay in office beyond our four
years tenure that I vowed not to exceed, that was why I chose her.”
Speaking on the occasion, chairman of Labour Party in the state, Mr
Akin Omole, said the selection of Mrs Ogunlade by the party was one of
the steps towards constituting an all-inclusive government in Ekiti
State, one he said “would take all interests in the state into
consideration.”
Omole said: “In the Labour Party government, no group in the state
will be left unattended to and that is what we have shown by the choice
of our running mate. We thank our candidate for accepting the decision
of the party and agreeing with our choice.”
While thanking the leaders of the party in the state and Bamidele for
giving her the opportunity, Mrs Ogunlade said she was grateful for the
privilege given to the entire Muslim community in Ekiti State and
assured that she would work hard to justify the confidence reposed in
her.
