Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman, Mr. Kayode Idowu, told Sunday PUNCH that the Commission had confidence in him, calling on those levelling allegations against the REC to provide evidence to back up their claims.
“INEC does not act on partisan sentiment or mere allegation. If we were to do that, it would result in a jungle situation; INEC doesn’t act on partisan allegations,” Idowu said.
Omisore spoke in Ile Ife on Wednesday during the visit of some political officers from the United States Consulate General to his residence.
According to him, the REC was a former employee of the national leader
of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, and that it would not be fair to other candidates.
Omisore also alleged that a court had ruled that Akeju was not fit to conduct elections in the state but said the appeal filed by the INEC against the ruling was shocking to him.
“The REC, Akeju was an employee of Bola Tinubu. He even represented Tinubu on two occasions at different events. The evidence was tendered at the court. The court ruled that he should not conduct election in the state and (Prof. Attahiru) Jega appealed against it. People are asking what is the interest of Jega in appealing the verdict,” he said.
“We have consistently said it that in Ekiti and Osun elections, only the permanent voter’s card will be used. It is amazing when people start raising issues over the INEC’s initiative to deploy card readers in the 2015 general elections.
“We are assuring Nigerians that the INEC will do anything within its power to ensure that elections are credible, free and fair,” Idowu added.
