INEC is colliding with top politicians to derail democracy in Enugu State” – PDP chairman
The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party,
PDP, in Enugu State, Mr. Vita Abba, on Friday
accused the Independent National Electoral
Commission, INEC, of colliding with top
politicians to derail democracy in the state.
Abba, who spoke against the backdrop of the
disappearance of the names of about 40 percent
of the registered voters in the state from the
INEC’s records, threatened to drag the
commission to court.
The development was discovered in a document
released by INEC just a few days to the
commencement of the distribution of
permanent voters cards on May 28.
Voters’ names captured in 621 out of 2945
registration centers in the state have been wiped
out from INEC’s records, despite the fact that
the affected individuals were issued with
temporary voters cards.
The 621 centers affected in the development are
mostly located in the Enugu North Senatorial
Zone, which the PDP leadership in the state
wants to produce its next governorship
candidate, in line with a power sharing
agreement.
Speaking after he led a party delegation to
protest over the development at the Enugu State
INEC office, Abba stated that the disappearance
of the voters’ names was part of a plot by the
Commission and some unnamed politicians to
scuttle the power sharing arrangement.
He said INEC and the politicians intend to rig
the 2015 elections in the state by
disenfranchising a large percentage of the
electorate.
Although he did not name the concerned
politicians who allegedly conspired with INEC to
“delete” the names of the voters, he hinted that
the masterminds include high ranking members
of the PDP, and members of opposition parties,
who are against the power sharing arrangement.
However, Abba vowed that the PDP in Enugu
State would employ all legitimate means,
including a legal action, to challenge the alleged
disenfranchisement.
He added that “PDP has critically studied the
document released by INEC and want to alert
the public that there is a grand plan – a collusion
between INEC and some politicians – to derail
democracy in the state”.
