Vigilantes guard Kano Govt House as police, troops withdraw

The Kano State Government House is being guarded by vigilantes, following the drastic reduction in the number of police personnel and withdrawal of soldiers there.
A Daily Trust reporter noticed yesterday that no soldier at the main gate while only a few policemen were stationed at the inner gate.
From the entrance, many operational vans of vigilantes were seen deployed. Our reporter also saw teams of vigilantes and men of the state Hisbah board in pick up vehicles stationed at the entrance to the Government House as well as some strategic locations in the area.
Many police officers were seen at the gate putting their personal belongings in bags, apparently getting ready to leave.
A security officer said the police were reducing their personnel from about 45 to 25, including those attached to the governor’s convoy.
He said the 20 soldiers that had been guarding the house had all been withdrawn on Monday, and no reason was given for the withdrawal.
Police spokesman ASP Magaji Musa Majiya said they still had a reasonable number of policemen at the Government House as it is their duty to provide security there.
Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso’s spokesman Halilu Ibrahim Dantiye, when contacted, described the security withdrawal as undemocratic.
