A delegate to the national conference,
Professor Sambo Waziri Junaidu, yesterday said though the conference is
desirable, the funds spent on it should have been channelled to other
areas of human endeavour.
“The conference in one way is desirable
because people are put together to discuss the problems of the nation.
On the other hand, I see it as a duplication of the work of the National
Assembly. If the National Assembly cannot solve the problems of
Nigeria, I doubt if a conference like this can do it. The money spent on
it could have been spent in developing other areas of human endeavour
like education and health,” he said.
Junaidu, who spoke in Sokoto, also faulted claims that government is behind the killings in the country.
He said Nigerians should take a cue from warring countries like Ukraine, Libya, Syria among others and try not to disintegrate.
“If the likes of Sardauna and Tafawa Balewa could promote tolerance during their time, I see no reason why in this new millennium we can cannot live and work together to develop this country,” he said.
Junaidu, a lecturer of Arabic Studies at the Usmanu
Danfodiyo University, Sokoto,
added that Northerners took to the conference a well articulated agenda
bordering on true federalism, ownership of resources or resource
control and one and indivisible country.
