There are strong indications that the Edo State governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole may be in for a serious competition in the 2nd edition of the 10 kilometres Okpekpe road race.
We gathered that the governors of Osun, Rivers and Delta states, Mr Rauf Aregbesola, Hon Rotimi Amaechi and Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan respectively, have sent in their registration forms to participate in the Okpekpe road race come 3rd of May, 2014.
A competent source said that the governors have also sent in words that they are not participating to increase the number of athletes but to win one of the star prizes of the competition.
He specifically mentioned Rivers and Osun governors whom he said vowed to give Oshiomhole a run for his money.
“Comrade Oshiomhole is in for trouble this time. If you hear what Hon Amaechi and Mr Aregbesola are saying, if Governor Oshiomhole does not train hard, they will knock him out,” the source said.
In order to meet the challenges posed by his colleagues, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole
has sought the services of Ali Yusuf as his trainer.
Ali who is also the administrator of the Okpekpe road race confirmed this yesterday on the ‘Sports Ville’ programme aired on Africa Independent Television.
He said the governor’s training will resume on Thursday, 24th April and he will be trained thrice a week before the date of the competition.
Ali also disclosed that 14 foreign athletes and over 5,000 Nigerian athletes have registered to participate in this year’s edition of the road race.
