Chief Shagari Oni, a chieftain of the All Progressives
Congress (APC) in Owan West Local Government Area
of Edo State, has expressed doubts about the planned
general elections in 2015.
Oni said the possibility of the general election taking
place in 2015 is dependent on the successful routing of
the Boko Haram insurgents with the support of the
international anti-terrorists corps now in the country.
“With what I am seeing in this country now, well, it is
only with these international bodies that have come to
our aid help us to solve our problem (Boko Haram), we
can say there will be election,” he said.
On the gale of defections from his party to the rival
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Oni said it has
to do with individual ambition.
“Defection has to do with self-dissatisfaction. When
you feel you’re not satisfied and the party
cannot meet
your needs, you’ll go to the other party to see if your
personal desire can be met,” he said.
He advised the defectors to be mindful of the fact that
as they move to the rival PDP “where you’re going,
you’re going to meet people there that may have the
same desire that you have. It is not possible for that
party to suppress the desire of the old members and
meet your own. Many people don’t put that into
consideration. Where you know is better than where
you don’t know. This has been my principle in politics.
I have never defected.”
Chief Oni refuted insinuations that the defection of
some aggrieved members of the APC will affect the
fortunes of the party.
“Let us see what will happen. Even where they’re
going, by the time nominations into positions start,
you’ll see what will happen. It is then that they’ll
discover that it would have been better if they had
remained in APC. I don’t see the defections affecting
the fortune of the APC,” he said.[Daily Independent]
