KWARA State government has said that it is
worthwhile to mark the nation’s Democracy Day,
stressing that the anniversary indicates that hope for
common man in this country is not lost.
Reacting to insinuations by the opposition in the state
that it is unnecessary to mark the anniversary due to
prevalent insecurity in the country, the alternative
chairman of the state’s May Day Committee, Dr Amuda
Kannike, said a planned week-long programme of
activities was to showcase and commission some
dividends of democracy already embarked upon by the
state government.
He said some 5,200 youths from the state would be
given employment under the
state’s Quick Win
Empowerment programme as part of activities marking
the third year anniversary of the incumbent
administration in the state.
“As a state, we are not insensitive to the plight and
situation of the nation, but as Governor Ahmed said
recently, ‘tough times do not last, tough people do’.
“The options we have as a state is to be helpless in the
situation that Nigeria has found itself. In the
alternative, it is to say that we will mark the democracy
day which is the last hope of the common man.,” he
added.
