The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has disclosed
the reasons behind the introduction of Permanent Voters Card (PVC),
believing that it is the most significant innovation in the electoral
process towards the 2015 general election.
The commission informed
that it has a microchip with the bio- data of each voter, adding that “
it is a machine readable card which would be given to each registered
voter”
The Kogi State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mr Olusegun Agbaje,
told newsmen in Lokoja, the state capital, that each PVC, had voters
information that will appear by scanning fingerprint on the card reader
informing that it is only a technological innovation and not targeted at
electronic voting which is not yet allowed by law in Nigeria.
He
insisted that electorate without the Permanent Voter Card, will not be
allowed to
cast their votes during the 2015 general election.
Agbaje explained that in accordance with section 10(1)of the 2010, as
amended, the commission will soon begin the continous voters
registration exercise to update the Electronic Voters Register since the
commission will no longer use addendum register.
This, according to him, would enable eligible Nigerians to present
themselves for registrations as voters, saying that Kogi State, is one
of the 10 states in the first of the Permanent Voters Card Distribution
and continuous exercise as announced by the commission’s headquarters
in its staggered programme for the conduct of the exercise nationwide
