Make findings of school desk contract public, Edo PDP tells Oshiomhole
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo
State has challenged the state government to
make public the findings of a panel that looked
into the award of contract for supply of school
desks to secondary schools in the state, few
years ago.
State chairman of the party, Chief Dan Orbih,
stated this in Benin City, while donating
notebooks and textbooks worth millions of
naira to students of Ihongbe College.
Orbih, who was conferred with the Nigeria
Academic and Authors Award (NAAA) award in
March by the association, had, on the occasion,
promised to regularly support the NAAA in
providing students in Edo public schools with
relevant exercise books and textbooks.
“Government should put politics aside and
address the problem facing the education sector
in Edo State. Go round the secondary schools,
you will see that the students don’t have chairs,
desks and teachers.
“Even the schools that were renovated don’t
have the necessary facilities to deliver content.
Government should reduce expenses on
frivolous travelling and entertainment of guests
and concentrate on the business of
governance,” Orbih said.
In her remark, Principal of Ihongbe Junior
Secondary School, Mrs Helen Oronsaye,
praised the philanthropic gesture of Chief
Orbih, pointing out that many students in the
school were from poor families and could not
afford to buy notebooks and textbooks on their
own.
