The new Emir of Kano, Malam Sanusi
Lamido Sanusi, yesterday received his staff of office and other royal
items which symbolize his royal authority.
The items received included the official
royal staff of office, the twin red and green coloured spears (Tagwayen
Masu), a pair of Ostrich-feathered shoes, the royal hat of Dabo
(Malafar Dabo), a short knife, a sword and the official royal robe of
the late emir, Alhaji Ado Bayero.
The items were brought around 11:50am to the President Nasser House, a complex within the Kano Government House where Sanusi has been residing since his emergence as emir.
A royal source said the symbols, which were delivered to Sanusi in a black Jeep, were retrieved from the late emir’s private room by palace aides- Shamaki, Sallama and Dan Rimi.
It was learnt that immediately after the items were brought, Sanusi who was sitting in the parlour dressed in an immaculate white gown, was led into an inner room where he was dressed in the formal royal robe and shoes worn by his predecessor.
The emir then returned to the packed parlour where he continued to receive homage from well wishers. Some of the top personalities that visited him included Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha, his Edo counterpart, Comrade Adams Oshiomole, top business mogul Alhaji Aliko Dangote and respected Islamic scholar Sheik Dahiru Bauchi among others.
In their comments, both Okorocha and Oshiomole condoled with the new monarch over the death of his predecessor and congratulated him on his ascension to the throne which they described as very important.
Meanwhile, the protests that trailed his selection died down yesterday as activities returned to normalcy.
Police surveillance points were mounted at strategic areas without subjecting motorists to any form of search. Residents went about their normal activities as against previous days when people stayed indoors due to the protests.
