OSUN 2014: How Osogbo Residents Reacted To DSS Sporadic Shootings As PDP’s Strategy Backfires

The mammoth crowd brought brooms from their various homes

The security siege imposed on Osun in recent days has introduced a flip to Osun gubernatorial politics. Hundreds of Osogbo residents trooped out on hearing that Aregbesola is observing jumat at Quareeb Mosque at Oke Bale area of Osogbo. The situation outside the mosque has become another mega rally before Ogbeni finished the Jumat prayers.
The mammoth crowd brought brooms from their various homes. The broom wielding crowd which consist largely of elderly women and Okada riders were saying “Aregbe, no shaking”!, “No to democracy at gunpoint”, “Tell them to go Chibok”, “Oranmiyan Leekansi” amongst others.
Addressing the congregation, the Governor commended the people
for their support, he however assured them that the DSS men are not enemies. A market woman who was screaming on the top of her voice in the crowd outside on the road leading to the mosque insisted that “we have resolved to be waiving broom to the DSS to show where we stand in a very peaceful manner.
An Okada man who simply identified himself as Taju said “I’m not a politician but why should they come here and be intimidating us, if they yet to get to power and they are brandishing guns like this, then Osun will be in deep problem if PDP ever return to power here”. The crowd turned to an unscheduled procession and it became a carnival of brooms before the Governor got to Oja Oba Area. The ecstatic crowd trekked several kilometres in company of the governor in validation of their ever increasing resolve to stand by Governor Aregbesola.
It would be recalled that Men of DSS two days ago drove around town in Osogbo and were shooting sporadically into the air everywhere in an apparent show of strength. The interesting thing was that rather than people running helter-skelter in the sight of the heavily armed DSS men, the residents in Okefia area of Osogbo responded with the shout of Up APC!!! Aregbe ni o, to the sound of each gunshot fired by the DSS.
The headship of the DSS later denied knowledge of the sporadic shooting in an interview with newsmen. However, it is apparent that the DSS display has swayed more undecided voters in favour of the APC in Osun, the DSS action has activated the traditional Yoruba sympathy for the underdog.
