Governor Sullivan Chime of Enugu
State has called on youths to emulate past Nigerian leaders and work
towards surpassing their deeds.
He stated this in Enugu, on Tuesday, while declaring open the South-East zonal centenary quiz.
He encouraged Nigerian youths to be educationally empowered, “and go into ventures that would positively impact on your lives.”
Chime advised them to shun social vices capable of ending their dreams and careers.
Represented by the state Commissioner for Education, Prof. Chris Okoro, he listed such social vices to include
kidnapping, corruption, cultism and examination malpractices.
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Pius Anyim, also called on youths to empower themselves both physically and intellectually for the development of the country.
Anyim, who was represented by the Managing Director, Nigeria Centenary City Plc, Drm Ikechukwu Odenigwe, said the aim of the quiz was to involve youths in the centenary celebration.
He said, “Centenary city is a legacy of the centenary celebration. It is important that youth join in the celebration because they will learn a lot about the history of the country.
“We are reposing our confidence on our youth, knowing that they are the leaders of tomorrow and that they will take the nation to greater heights.”
The Enugu State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Mr. Chijioke Agu, called for more commitment and dedication from the youths to be change agents.
He said the Federal Government, through this programme, had shown interest in the youth.
“This challenges us to be change agents for the growth of the nation,” Agu said.
National Coordinator of the competition, Mrs. Angela Mmo, said the competition was part of activities of the Federal Government to seek Nigeria’s centenary genius.
Mmo said the programme was designed to educate youth and test their knowledge on the country’s history, culture and sports, adding that, “the centenary genius competition, which would be conducted in Abuja, would win a prize of N1m.”
Thirty youths drawn from Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo states participated in the quiz competition.
