Groups Demand Nyako’s Resigination, Impeachment

Ripples of the letter by the Adamawa State Governor, Murtala Nyako, to the northern states governors alleging genocide against some northern states  continued yesterday as  two pro-presidency groups, ‘The Save Adamawa State Movement (SASM) and the United Nigeria Forum (UNF)  called for the resignation of the governor over his indictment by the expanded national security council meeting that took place last week, saying it brought shame to the state.
Specifically, SASM called on the federal government to impose a full scale state of emergency in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe States in which the governors would be removed from office and allow the military to take full control of the administration of the states.

The UNF, a coalition of some civil rights groups, demanded that the state House of Assembly should commence impeachment proceedings against Nyako.

But the state Director of Press and Publicity, Ahmad Sadjo, while faulting the anti-Nyako groups asked: “Are they saying it’s not true that people operate at night when we are supposed to have a night time curfew? Are they saying it’s not true that these people (Boko Haram members) pass through areas that are supposed to have 24 hours military check points? Are they saying it’s not true that these people
operate five to six hours unchallenged? Are they saying it’s not true that they move in long convoys?:”

Accusing the presidency of funding the anti Nyako groups, he said: “They can collect money from the presidency and say whatever they want to say; the reality is on ground and even the president knows he is definitely wrong.

How possible was it that when there is a night time curfew and with a 24-hou military check points in every two to three kilometre, a large convoy of vehicles came to abduct over 100 school girls in Chibok, Borno State, and disappeared as if they were ghosts? These are questions to be asked if we will ever have peace in this country.”

According to the UNF, the federal government should declare “a full state of emergency in Adamawa State,” and install a military administrator to stop all the evils being allegedly perpetrated by politicians.”

The UNF also called on President Goodluck Jonathan to mount pressure on security agencies to ensure Nyako’s arrest, “because his memo is a dress rehearsal.”

In the same manner, the SASM, in a communiqué at the end of its meeting in Abuja, said the indictment of Nyako did not come to its members as a surprise, having lived with him as governor in the last eight years.

The communiqué which was signed by its National President, Stephen Albert, noted with pity that Nigerians only came to terms with the fact that Nyako had always been a disaster.

Accordingly, SASM said: “We have always known him as a failure from his days in the military, during which General Ibrahim Babangida as military president was forced to demote him from the vibrant office of Chief of Naval Staff to the redundant position of Deputy Chief of Defence Staff.
“We opposed his choice as governor when former President Olusegun Obasanjo imposed him on Adamawa State as a form of punishment for the ‘sins’ of his then vice, Atiku Abubakar.

“As indigenes of the state, we feel humiliated as a people by the strong words used against our governor by his fellow governors and indeed by everybody that attended the expanded security meeting, including his juniors in the military, like the Minister of Defence, General Aliyu Gusau (rtd), and the National Security Adviser (NSA) Col. Sambo Dasuki.”

Members of the SASM also said the right thinking members of the state felt highly insulted with the school boy manner Nyako was made to read his so called memo, just to show him how stupid he was and to further prove to him that nobody shared his views on the insurgency or the allegations of genocide he levelled against President Jonathan.

“Nyako, for your fellow governors to have described your memo as written ‘in bad faith’, and described you as an ethnic irredentist, is a big shame. Simply put, the verdict of the meeting was clear; please, resign your office,” the communiqué stated.

The Movement also noted that as a matter of fact, the paper delivered by Nyako in Washington, United States, and the memo he wrote to Northern States Governors’ Forum was meant to position him as the new Defender-In-Chief of the North adding however that the real aim was designed to cover up his disastrous years as governor of the state.

The Movement further stated that: “Till date, Nyako is yet to inaugurate any project because there is none. He owes teachers and civil servants which was why in the last WAEC results, out of the 31,000 students who sat for the examination, only 1,300 passed. What a shame.

“Just last week in Zamfara State, some uninformed people hailed him as ‘maganin arna’ meaning the solution of unbelievers. This is the dangerous game Nyako has embarked upon.

“We make bold to declare that it is not enough to chastise Nyako, because he has done some real damage in poisoning the minds of some northerners against the person of President Jonathan and the vast majority of Nigerians by his utterances and letter. The effect of this will be seen after the 2015 general elections.”

SASM also said now that the whole world has seen through his antics, it therefore called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and other anti-corruption agencies to probe the finances of the state government, which in the first place was the reason behind Nyako’s recent posturing as ‘Defender of North’.

“The anti-graft agencies should as a matter of urgency probe the finances of the state, especially the Ministry for Local Government where over N5 million was reportedly spent on the Skills Acquisition Centres and the a billion dollar German Specialist Hospital,” the SASM demanded.
