With less than five months to the conduct of August 9, 2014
governorship election in OsunState, the state chapter of the Peoples
Democratic Party (PDP), on Sunday ,allegedly accused Governor Rauf
Aregbesola and his party, the All progressives Congress (APC) ,of
searching through courts, with a view to linking its flag bearer,
Senator Iyiola Omisore ,with any criminal offence, be it as a principal
or assesory.
The party alleged that the latest plot was a fallout of APC and
Aregbesola’s failure in the court of justice and the court of public
opinion to successfully implicate Omisore in the killing of the former
Minister for Power, Chief Bola Ige, who was murdered at his Ibadan
residence on December 23, 2001.
In a press statement forwarded by the Osun PDP’s Publicity Secretary,
Prince Bola Ajao ,to newsmen in Osogbo, on Sunday, the party claimed
that “as revealed through the grapevine, part of their desperate effort
to stop the PDP’s candidate from contesting the forthcoming election in
Osun State is Aregbesola’s commissioned agents to search through the
courts with a view to linking Omisore with any criminal offence, be it
as a principal or an accessory”.
According
to the statement, “this satanic plot is premised under the ’the
principle
of participis criminis’. We sympathise with Aregbesola and his
cohorts for having become a lame-duck government and now resort to
this shadow chasing. Let it be noted that the more you fire gold, the
purer it becomes. The more thorns you seem to be putting on the way of
our candidate, the more appreciated he becomes and the more sympathy he
gets from the people”.
But, in a swift reaction, the APC’s Director of Publicity, Research
and Strategy, Mr Kunle Oyatomi, said the PDP and its candidate for the
August 9 governorship election, Omisore, were planning to import
miscreants and thugs to Osun State to stage unwarranted protests in
order to create mayhem and disturb the reigning peace.
He affirmed that “these senseless and unwarranted protests are
intended to manipulate the populace, the electorate and the electoral
system in their favour. Plans are said to have been concluded by both
Omisore and the PDP to create a virtual state of confusion before August
9 ,believing that if the plan works, it would facilitate an easier
manipulation of the electoral process and their rigging exercise”.
Describing the development as a “sinister conspiracy against law and
order in Osun, which has been known and confirmed by responsible
individuals and foreign diplomats in the country as a safe and peaceful
place to do business and attract investments,” Oyatomi urged “the law
enforcement agencies in the zone and in the state to ensure that this
evil plan does not succeed in the interest of democracy, law and order
and peace”.
But the PDP contended that the APC’s plots would amount to nothing
in the resolves of the masses to vote out Aregbesola’s government in
August 9, declaring that “for the avoidance of doubt, we would like to
state unequivocally that our candidate, Omisore, has no skeleton in his
cupboard.
