Gunmen attack UniUyo Vice- Chancellor’s Lodge
The spokesperson of the Akwa Ibom State
Police Command, Etim Dickson, said the
police had yet to receive formal report of
the incident.
Gunmen have attacked the official
residence of the Vice-Chancellor of the
University of Uyo, Comfort Ekpo, firing
bullets into her premises.
No life was lost during the incident.
This is contained in a statement issued by
the Registrar of the University, Edak
Umodak, on Thursday in Uyo.
The statement said that it took the
gallantry of security men attached to the
residence to repel the hoodlums.
“The gunmen, who were spotted by the
fence engaged in a gun duel with
policemen on duty and later zoomed off in
their parked vehicle.
“The University of Uyo is grateful to God
that no life was lost in the encounter,” the
registrar said.
Mr. Umodak said the authorities of the
university had alerted security operatives
on the incident.
She alleged that the vice chancellor was
attacked because of her determination to
entrench culture of discipline and hard
work in the institution.
“It has become very necessary to alert
members of the public about the
escalating violence against our amiable
vice-chancellor.
“All God-fearing people should condemn
this act and I urge aggrieved persons to
adopt legitimate approaches to resolving
issues,” she advised.
The spokesperson of the Akwa Ibom State
Police Command, Etim Dickson, however,
said that the command had yet to receive
formal report of the incident from the
university.
In June 2013, during a protest by students
over hike in transport fare between the
university’s main campus and city centre,
the vice-chancellor’s office complex and
university’s records unit were razed down.
