I don’t select traditional rulers —Mimiko

Ondo State governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko on Tuesday, said he was never responsible for the selection and appointment of any traditional ruler in the state. He said the state government only act as “referee” to regulate the processes in order to avert crisis in the various communities of the state. The governor said this in Akure, the state capital, at the presentation of staff of office and instrument of office to the Olikan of Etikan kingdom in Ilaje local government area of the state, Oba Adeleke Oyetakin. Mimiko, who spoke through the state Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Bamiduro Dada, said the state government only act on the processes put in place by the communities to their local government areas. He said government’s role in the coming on board of any traditional ruler is to ensure that the due process is followed adding that he was not in the position to choose a traditional ruler for any community. The governor said, “Today, you are being enthroned as the Olikan of Etikan land, God has only used the governor as a tool for you to realise your dream. It is not Mimiko that put you on the throne. “Government does not choose an Oba for any town or community, we only play the role of a referee to ensure that everything is done according to due process”. Speaking, the chairman of the Caretaker Committee, Ilaje local government, Soji Ayenuro, said the move would further develop the community. He appreciated the traditional ruler for remaining peaceful throughout the period that the struggle for the throne lasted. The local government boss noted that despite losing his first son during the period, the Olikan remained committed to the peace and development of the community. Oyetakin, however, thanked God for sparing his life to witness his installation as an Oba in his community. He also lauded Mimiko for the maturity and understanding displayed while handling the matter.
