Impeachment: Adamawa governor should defend himself – Gundiri

Candidate of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in the 2012 gubernatorial election in Adamawa State, Engineer Markus Natina Gundiri, has called on Governor Murtala Nyako to respond to allegations levelled against him by the state House of Assembly. The lawmakers had served the governor a notice of impeachment, accusing him of gross mismanagement of funds and administrative recklessness. In an interview with journalists last Thursday, Gundiri, who is now a committed member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), said he was totally in support of the action of the lawmakers in the state. “I support what the House of Assembly in Adamawa is doing. Anyone who runs contrary to the constitution should face the consequence of his action. Even if I become the governor of the state and work against the constitution it would be appropriate for me to face my action. Governor Nyako should be bold enough to defend himself instead of playing to the gallery. He is not above the law,’’ Gundiri said. He said it was unfortunate that Adamawa State has been backward for the past seven years as a result of what he called the “activities of politicians without vision.’’ “Within the last seven years, things have gone very bad in the state. There is no good education and some civil servants are not paid their salaries. And there are other pressing issues that require proper attention in the state,’’ he submitted, and alleged that Adamawa State is currently being run as a family business. Asked about his opinion on Governor Nyako’s recent comment on insecurity in the North-East, he said, “The governor cannot exonerate himself from insecurity in Adamawa State.’’ Also answering questions on why he has gone back to the PDP, the governorship aspirant said the party has become truly democratic. “The PDP is more democratic than before. It now abides by the rule of law; hence, any reasonable person will like to join,’’ he said.
