Former Ekiti State governor, Ayo Fayose, has stated the need for peace and tolerance in the coming governorship poll in the state saying neither would he nurse malice against those that orchestrated his impeachment nor take vengeance if elected as governor.
Fayose, who is a Peoples Democratic Party governorship aspirant, was impeached on October 16, 2006 on the allegation of corruption.
Speaking during the kick off of his campaign tour of local government councils in the state on Friday, Fayose said he was sure of emerging as the party candidate in a transparent primaries.
The former governor said he was the most qualified and popular to confront Governor
Kayode Fayemi at the poll, having defeated Otunba Niyi Adebayo in 2003 in a circumstance similar to the present situation.
Fayose said, “I am not an advocate of consensus. I love primaries. I
was one of those who fought that there should be primaries and I am
ready for it financially and spiritually. When we go to the field, we will all test our popularity among our members.
“I am ready to support whoever emerges in a transparent primaries,
even if he defeats me by only one vote. I don’t take pleasure in
anything that doesn’t follow due process”.
On the fear that he might punish those that worked for his impeachment
if elected, he said, “Some said I will be vindictive, am I God? Vengeance is of the lord.
“Whether you like it or not, PDP still needs someone like me. Our
party should not field someone who cannot win election. I don’t want to end at the level of candidacy the way others were thinking. I want to get the ticket and conquer for you”.
