Ekiti: PDP Governorship Candidate To Emerge Saturday

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, flag bearer for the June 21 governorship election in Ekiti State, will emerge on Saturday.

The date for the party’s governorship primaries was announced by the national leadership of PDP after its meeting in Abuja on Monday.
All the 14 aspirants, who were cleared for the exercise, are to take part
in the primaries, just as the party has fixed today (Tuesday) for its Ward congresses which will serve as the process of selecting delegates for the primaries.
These were the decisions reached by the leadership of the Party after a closed door meeting with all the aspirants and some stakeholders of the party from Ekiti State after repeated attempts to make the aspirants to agree on a consensus candidate failed.
It was gathered that while majority of the aspirants reportedly agreed to the idea of a consensus candidate as espoused by President Goodluck Jonathan, a former governor of the state, Mr Ayo Fayose was said to have insisted on primaries for the best candidate to emerge for the election.
Speaking with journalists after the meeting of the National Working Committee of the party, National Publicity Secretary of PDP, Chief Olisa Metuh said the party would organise primary election for the aspirants if they could not totally agree on a consensus arrangement among themselves in line with the party’s constitution.
Metuh noted that the party would only throw its weight behind the consensus arrangement if all the aspirants agreed among themselves but that once one or two disagreed, the Party would have no option than to organize a transparent, free and fair primaries for the aspirant to emerge as the party’s flag bearer among the lot.
He said in line with this position, the ward congresses for the selection of the party’s delegates for the primaries would hold tomorrow in the state.
