INEC frowns at politicians’ impunity on electoral process

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) yesterday lamented the “persistent” impunity of politicians and their supporters on the electoral process in the country.

The commission warned that such acts by some partisan individuals are capable of derailing

the attainment of international best practice in the conduct of Nigeria’s elections.
Spokesperson of the commission, Kayode Idowu in a statement on Ekiti and Osun upcoming elections, said INEC has noted with regret “the persisting tendency towards impunity by some partisans and their supporters in the electoral process.
“Unless politicians abide at all times by relevant rules and codes of ethics, and also persuade their supporters to do likewise, the Nigerian electoral process would be hindered from attaining to international best standards that INEC is working hard to take it.”
On the upcoming states elections in Ekiti and Osun, the commission advised electorates to visit its local government offices for the collection of Permanent Voter’s Card (PVC).
INEC explained the governorship elections in the two states and subsequent general elections would not recognise temporary voter’s cards.
