Let us unite against Boko Haram —Anenih •Blasts opponents over calls for Jonathan’s resignation[Nigerian Tribune]

The Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BOT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Tony Anenih, on Sunday, called on all patriotic Nigerians to unite against Boko Haram in the country. Anenih also condemned the opposition for calling on President Goodluck Jonathan to resign on account of the raging Boko Haram insurgency and the recent abduction of over 200 students of Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok, by the insurgents, saying the call was unpatriotic and should be condemned by all patriotic Nigerians. Chief Anenih, in a statement entitled: ‘Let us unite against Boko Haram,’ made available to news men in Abuja, urged all Nigerians, irrespective of regional, religious or political affiliations to unite in the fight against Boko Haram rather than apportioning blames or calling for the resignation of the president. The PDP chieftain called on the opposition to learn from the Westgate Shopping Mall killings in Kenya where the opposition leader, Rahila Odinga, stood right by the side of President Uhuru Kenyatta when the latter was addressing Kenyans on the dastardly attack. He also recalled how the people of America and Great Britain closed ranks and rallied support for their respective governments in the aftermath of al-Qaeda deadly attacks on their nations, pointing out that in none of these cases did the citizens call on their president or prime minister to resign. Chief Anenih also commended the United Nations solidarity and the collaboration by France, United States of America and Great Britain with Nigeria and her Francophone neighbours, namely Chad, Cameroon, Niger and Benin Republic, among others, towards the Boko Haram insurgents in the country. He stated that Jonathan had so far done well in the fight against Boko Haram even as he declared that no president of Nigeria could have done better within the ambits of constitutional powers. The statement reads: “At a time that our nation is facing the menace of terrorism, it is of utmost importance that all Nigerians, irrespective of their regional, religious or political affiliations, should be united in supporting the Federal Government and all the security agencies in the fight to end terror in our country.
